Most people see Africa through the window of a safari vehicle, watching the landscape move past from a seat surrounded by a metal box.  Tembea Na Mimi is very different. We invite you to put your feet on the ground and experience Kenya as the Kenyans do by walking 150-180 miles across the heart of Kenya to support the work of Lalmba.
We are looking for 10 to 15 adventurous individuals to join us for this 10-day trek. It is a journey that begins in the vast expanse of the Rift Valley and ends at the gates of our Matoso clinic on the shores of Lake Victoria.Â
We walk to support the work of Lalmba, reaching people who live at “the end of the road.”

From the vast plains of the Mara to the shores of Lake Victoria, each step is a story. We laugh, we cry (a little), and we see Kenya in a way few ever do — not from a safari van, but on foot, beside the people and places that shape this country’s soul.
For the first five days, we walk across the Maasai Mara. There are no safari vehicles or traffic jams here. Instead, we move at the pace of our pack camels, seeing the wildlife and the vastness of the Mara from a personal and local perspective.
The final five days take us through rural Kenya. You will walk through villages where life is lived simply. You will see and experience the joys, and the struggles of rural life in Kenya.Â
This isn’t just a physical challenge, it is a journey of the heart, mind, and soul. Along the way, we share meals, songs, struggles, and triumphs. And we end where Lalmba’s story continues, at our clinic in Matoso, greeted by singing children and hundreds of community members whose lives are impacted by your support.
Lalmba serves communities at the “end of the road”. We operate medical clinics and children’s programs in places where healthcare and other resources are otherwise out of reach.
Lalmba isn’t an “outside organization” coming in with its own answers. We are the spirit of the local clinical officers, nurses, and social workers who work in our clinics and care for over 1,200 children every day. Our work is led by Kenyans and Ethiopians caring for their own neighbors. When you walk, you are providing the resources they need to help a mother care for her baby or a young student stay in school.
The funds raised by Tembea Na Mimi are vital. They keep the lights on in the clinics, pay the staff, stock the pharmacy shelves, and ensure that children who have lost their parents still have a home and a chance to go to school.
This is a rugged, outdoor experience. We camp in tents, filter our water, and start our walk each day before sunrise, to beat the heat of the midday sun.
Fundraising Goal: Each walker commits to raising $10,000 for Lalmba’s programs. This is a significant goal, but it is what allows our work in Kenya and Ethiopia to continue year after year.
Trip Cost: The approximate cost for the trip is $5,500 plus flights. This covers your logistics and travel, ensuring that every dollar you raise goes directly to the people we serve.
The Reward: You will see the work firsthand. You will meet the staff in Matoso and the children in our programs. Most of our walkers find that the connection they feel to the people and the land stays with them long after they return home.
This truly is the adventure of a lifetime!
June 14-17: The walkers arrive in Nairobi, sightseeing & recovering from jetlag.
June 19: The walk begins East of the Maasai Mara.
June 23: Transition from the Mara into the hills of rural Kenya.
June 29: Arrival in Matoso.
June 30-July 2: Tour Lalmba’s clinic and visit the children’s home.
Special Note: We are considering possibly adding one day (a rest day) in the middle of the walk. This would extend the walk to 11 days. As the team starts to form, we will discuss this and see if there is interest.
Our walkers can’t do this alone—they need your support! Here’s how you can get involved:
Since our first walk in 2015, we’ve covered over 960 miles and raised more than $836,000 to support Lalmba’s vital work in Africa. That’s an incredible $870 for every mile trekked! Every step taken and every dollar raised have been instrumental in helping children access education, empowering rural communities, restoring health to the sick, and bringing dignity to elders. Your participation continues this impactful legacy.
